He served under Charles II against the Dutch and commanded the expedition to relief Tangier, In 1687, he became Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire.To the title has been added in a neat contemporary hand to match the style of the engraving, 'Gentleman of his Bedchamber Colonell of the Holland Regiment Governour of Hull Now created Marquis of Normanby' . A later state has similar wording and his date of death added to the plate.
